Advancing Trans-regional Aqua Networks for Technology and Innovative Synergies
Advancing Underwater Robotics for Europe’s Blue Future
Europe’s seas, lakes and other aquatic environments are essential to biodiversity, climate stability, economic activity and human well-being. However, working underwater remains difficult, expensive and sometimes dangerous. ATLANTIS is helping to change that.
The ATLANTIS project is advancing practical underwater robotic solutions that combine robotic platforms, intelligent sensors, artificial intelligence, edge-to-cloud data systems and intuitive human–machine interfaces. These technologies will help operators inspect, monitor and interact with underwater environments more safely and effectively.
Europe already has strong expertise in underwater robotics, but access to advanced technologies and demonstration facilities remains uneven between regions. ATLANTIS connects technology developers in More Developed Regions with SMEs, companies, research organisations and public authorities in Less Developed and Transition Regions. This allows organisations to acquire, adapt and operate advanced underwater robotic solutions according to their local needs.
The project will implement eight real-world use cases and demonstrate each solution at Technology Readiness Level 7. These demonstrations will cover areas such as water-quality inspection, environmental monitoring and other underwater operations requiring reliable sensing, mobility and intervention.
ATLANTIS brings together robotics, AI, sensing, digital technologies and regional expertise to create stronger European innovation networks. By sharing knowledge, demonstrating solutions in real environments and making advanced technology accessible to more regions, the project will support safer, more efficient and more sustainable work beneath the water
What ATLANTIS Will Deliver
Eight Real-World Use Cases
Eight underwater robotics solutions will be demonstrated in realistic operational environments and advanced to Technology Readiness Level 7.
Advanced Underwater Robotic Systems
Robotic platforms will combine intelligent sensors, autonomous capabilities, and underwater manipulation tools to perform complex tasks safely and reliably.
Smarter Aquatic Monitoring
ATLANTIS will support improved water-quality inspection, environmental monitoring, and underwater data collection in marine and inland waters.
Stronger European Innovation Networks
ATLANTIS will connect technology developers with SMEs, research organisations, public authorities, and end users across Europe, supporting knowledge transfer and the wider deployment of underwater robotic solutions.
Why It Matters
Protecting Aquatic Environments
ATLANTIS uses robotics, advanced sensors, and artificial intelligence to support environmental monitoring, pollution detection, ecosystem restoration, and other important tasks in seas and inland waters.
Turning Innovation into Real-World Solutions
Eight use cases will demonstrate underwater technologies in realistic operating environments. This will help transform promising research into reliable solutions that organisations can confidently use.
Connecting Europe’s Regions
ATLANTIS brings together universities, technology developers, companies, and public organisations from regions with different levels of innovation capacity. By sharing knowledge, facilities, and expertise, the project helps advanced underwater technologies benefit more regions across Europe.
