ATLANTIS — Advancing Underwater Innovation Across Europe
ATLANTIS aims to create a connected European ecosystem for underwater innovation—where advanced robotics, artificial intelligence and environmental responsibility come together to protect aquatic environments and support the sustainable development of Europe’s blue economy.
The Vision
ATLANTIS is a pioneering European initiative transforming how robotic technologies are developed and used in seas, coastal areas and inland waters. The project brings together 24 universities, research organisations, technology developers, companies and public authorities from nine European countries. By connecting regions with different levels of innovation capacity, ATLANTIS will make advanced underwater technologies, knowledge and demonstration opportunities more widely accessible across Europe.
At the heart of ATLANTIS is an integrated technological approach combining underwater robotic vehicles, cameras, sonar systems, environmental sensors, robotic manipulators and artificial intelligence. These technologies will be connected through an edge-to-cloud platform and accessible through user-friendly human–machine interfaces. Together, they will allow operators to monitor aquatic environments, inspect underwater infrastructure, detect pollution, support ecosystem restoration and perform complex tasks more safely and efficiently.
ATLANTIS will demonstrate these technologies through eight real-world use cases in marine and inland-water environments. Each solution will be demonstrated at Technology Readiness Level 7, showing that the complete system can operate successfully under realistic conditions.
By bringing underwater innovation closer to real users and real environmental challenges, ATLANTIS will strengthen cooperation between European regions, support the development of reliable aquatic technologies and contribute to cleaner, safer and more sustainable waters.
A New Standard for Intelligent Aquatic Operations
ATLANTIS introduces a fully integrated underwater robotics and digital technology ecosystem:
Intelligent robotic platforms perform environmental monitoring, underwater inspection, pollution detection, ecosystem restoration and other complex tasks in seas and inland waters.
Advanced cameras, sonar and environmental sensors collect detailed information about underwater conditions, infrastructure and aquatic ecosystems.
An edge-to-cloud digital platform connects robots, sensors, operators and data services, allowing information to be processed and shared efficiently.
User-friendly human–machine interfaces help operators plan missions, monitor robotic systems and understand the information collected underwater.
Eight real-world use cases demonstrate the complete technologies at Technology Readiness Level 7 in realistic aquatic environments.
This connected approach enables underwater operations that are safer, smarter and more environmentally responsible—reducing risks to people, improving the quality of aquatic information and supporting the sustainable management of Europe’s seas and inland waters.
